Mobile App Reviews

I review apps based on their cost/benefit, functionality, and how much data access they ask for up front (I don't read of the privacy policies... I'm not an attorney and couldn't give a professional opinion anyway haha).

So the apps get a pass or fail recommendation based on my amateur opinion.

PASS

- Sailing Coach

This app is as good for explaining the basic concept behind the relationship between wind angle and sail angle as it is simple. One feature, no frills.

- EasySailTrim

Hold on to your seats, folks! I cannot recommend this app enough. With two simple inputs, True Wind Speed (TWS) and Apparent Wind Angle (AWA), this app allows you to tab through each sail control for a thorough description of what it is and how it can best be adjusted in the preset conditions. You can use your finger to rotate the boat graphic to see how the sails should be set. Great app!!!

- Race Master

I've been using this app for a while, and it has great features although I admittedly usually just use it for start timing. For pursuit starts it also includes a preset start time feature. It also allows you to set pin and boat positions, as well as triangulate other marks using your camera.

- Racing Rules (US Sailing)

I highly recommend a US Sailing membership and you log in to this app using your membership (just one of many benefits of membership). This app is good to have as a reference for racing rules.

- Rules of Sailing Tips 2.0

This app has simple features and shows great videos about the basic rules of sailing. Great for showing new sailors how to navigate around other sailboats!

- Regatta Countdown

This app has a race start clock, pin and boat end of the line feature, the ability to enter marks on the course, and speed metrics.

- SailTime

A race start clock for those that don't need anything else. A bit too simple for my taste, since I want speed and other metrics.

- Sailing Hub

All of the other race features but in a nice large format easy to see.

- Dinghy Sailing

Looks like a good comprehensive app. Still need to test it out on my 470 to see if it is really functional.

FAIL

The following apps failing my simple test because they wanted mt to register with them:

- Sailing Watch

- SailTrace

- Sailing Together

- Starboard Sail

Maybe I'll give them a second look later.
